The Binnenhof sits in the centre of The Hague, a short tram from Den Haag Centraal. The inner courtyard has been under renovation in phases; check which sides are open. The Ridderzaal is the medieval hall used for ceremony. The Hofvijver pond is the public face: a sheet of water, the skyline of towers, and a path you can do in ten minutes.
A castle that kept the desks
Counts of Holland fortified this island in the 13th century. The republic and then the kingdom kept meeting here. That is unusual in Europe — a working parliament inside the original court. When scaffolding is up, the idea is still readable from the pond.
Amsterdam is the postcard city. The Hague is where the state sits. This courtyard is why a first visit to the city is not only the beach at Scheveningen.
Why people stand at the fence
The photograph is the Ridderzaal towers over the water. What it leaves out is the security perimeter and how much of the ‘visit’ is just walking the outer path well.
Do not expect a walk-in tour of ministries. Book the visitor centre if you need an interior. Otherwise the pond is the card.

Tram 1 or 16 toward the centre. Combine with the Mauritshuis next door if you want one indoor hour. Wind off the Hofvijver is real. Do not stack Amsterdam and this as the same rushed morning.
