The Empire State Building sits on Fifth Avenue between 33rd and 34th, on the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R to 34th Street–Herald Square. Observatory tickets are timed — Tiqets holds those deck slots when the official queue is ugly. The 86th-floor deck is the one that earns the fare; the 102nd is an extra layer of glass. Wind and cloud decide more than the brochure. If the ceiling is low, pay for a later slot or walk instead.
How a race built an office
It went up in 1930–31 for John J. Raskob, in a race with the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street. William F. Lamb of Shreve, Lamb & Harmon designed the setbacks the 1916 zoning law required. Four and a half months of steel. 1,250 feet to the roof, 1,454 to the tip of the mast that was meant for airships and never really used that way. It opened 1 May 1931, into the Depression, and spent years half empty. The mast later took television antennas. King Kong did more for the silhouette than any leasing brochure.
Until 1970 it was the world’s tallest building. The lobby is a separate Art Deco room of marble and aluminium; you do not need a deck ticket to see the ceiling. The lights on the crown change for holidays and sports. That is the building New Yorkers actually look at.
Why people still book the deck
Search volume is the honest answer: it is the skyscraper foreigners can name. Central Park to the north, the harbour to the south, and a grid you finally understand from above. Unlike One World Trade, it sits in the middle of Midtown, so the view is the city rather than the memorial. Sunset slots sell first. Weekday mornings are kinder.
It is also a film set people have already visited in their heads. That is why the souvenir shop is part of the route. The useful part is still the 86th floor in clear air, with the Chrysler Building in the same frame.
If you go
Book the official site or a ticket desk you trust; street hawkers sell the same slot at a worse time. Do not stack it with the Statue of Liberty on the same morning — two security lines and a harbour schedule will eat the day. Skip the 102nd if the 86th is in cloud. Walk south on Fifth afterward; Herald Square is not the exit you want to linger in.
