The Hofburg sits in the Innere Stadt, a short walk from Herrengasse or Stephansplatz. It is still used. The president works here. The Spanish Riding School, the imperial apartments, the Sisi Museum, and the National Library are separate tickets inside the same pile of stone. Vienna already has Schönbrunn as the summer palace. This is the winter one, in the middle of the city, when you are already walking the Ring.
A fortress that became a government
The first castle on this ground is 13th century. Every Habsburg who could add a wing did. The Neue Burg, facing the Heldenplatz, is the late, heavy one; Hitler addressed a crowd from that terrace in 1938, which the city now marks and does not decorate. The complex holds the treasury, the Papyrus Museum, the Weltmuseum, and enough corridors to waste a day if you treat it as one museum. It is not one museum.
The Prunksaal, the state hall of the National Library, is the room that still stops people who think they do not care about libraries. Fischer von Erlach’s baroque, globes, and a painted vault. The Spanish Riding School is morning exercise if you book, a performance if you pay more, and a stable visit if you want horses without the theatre. Sisi is a brand. The apartments are the brand’s warehouse.
Why it is not optional
Because Vienna’s centre is this building, whether you go in or not. Because the Habsburgs left their office in the middle of the map. Because the library is prettier than most churches. It is popular with people who have already done Schönbrunn and want the urban version, and with people who only have a day and think one palace is enough. One palace is not enough if you pick the wrong rooms.
If you go
Pick the library or the imperial rooms, not both before lunch. The Heldenplatz is free and does more civic work than another gilded stove. Do not stack it with Schönbrunn on the same morning. The Ring is the walk that holds them apart on purpose.
