Óbidos is an hour north of Lisbon by bus from Campo Grande, or a short drive off the A8. You enter through the southern gate, under a balcony lined with azulejos, and the main street, Rua Direita, does the tourist work. The actual visit is the wall walk: a narrow, unguarded circuit with views of rooftops and the lagoon plain. Wear shoes that grip. The castle at the north end is now a pousada; you can still climb the keep.
How a dowry town kept its walls
The Moors held it; Afonso Henriques took it in the 12th century. From 1282 it was a traditional wedding gift of Portuguese kings to their queens, which is why you still see the queen’s coat of arms. The walls were rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. The castle became a hotel in the 1950s, an early pousada, which saved the fabric by putting beds in it. The town is a short rectangle of whitewash and bougainvillea, too complete to be accidental: it was conserved as a showpiece.
Cherry liqueur, ginjinha, served in chocolate cups, is the stall drink. The medieval fair in July is a later invention that fills the streets. The aqueduct on the way in is 16th century and still the honest approach by car.
Why Lisbon day-trips stop here
Because it is the walled town you can do without an overnight, and because the photographs look like a different country from the Lisbon grid. Search interest follows ‘Óbidos day trip’. People come for the walls, buy ginjinha, and leave before the light gets good. Stay until late afternoon if you can. The buses thin out; the walls do not.
It is popular because it is finite and pretty. That is also why Rua Direita is a gauntlet of the same shops. Walk the walls clockwise and drop into the side lanes; the town is three streets deep, not one.
If you go
Do not stack it with Sintra on the same day — two hill towns, two crowds, one tired evening. Go on a weekday. The wall has no railings in places; skip it in rain. Drink the ginjinha if you want; eat outside the gate where residents do. The lagoon, Óbidos lagoon, is a different stop if you have a car.
