Paper maps still work. They do not tell you the platform changed. In Japan a working data connection is the difference between the system feeling obvious and the system feeling closed, for about two hours at the airport if you have neither phone nor IC card.
Germany is easy to over-schedule because ICE makes the next city look close. It is close. The connection still has a platform, a delay, and an app that assumes you can read it. The Netherlands is built for arriving by train with a bag you do not want to drag over cobbles for four hours before check-in. None of that is easier with a dead phone.
Get the connection working before you need a platform number. The rest of the week can be analogue. The first transfer should not be.
