The hill above the city

The postcard is usually at street level. The week often turns on the place you have to climb for.

A city has a floor, and then it has a hill. In Paris that is Sacré-Cœur, which is a terrace more than a church. In Kyoto it is the walk up to Kiyomizu-dera. In Chiang Mai the road keeps going, to Doi Suthep.

The hill is not a bonus viewpoint. It is how you see whether the city has a shape. Galata Tower does that from the other bank of the Horn. Delphi does it without a city at all, which is why it is a night, not a half-day from Athens.

Walk up once. Take the photograph if you must. Then sit until the light changes. The floor of the city will still be there when you come down.
